Green Lantern Corps No.2 by AlexGarner Green Lantern Corps No.2 by AlexGarner
Cover to Green Lantern Corps #2

Not very pleased with myself on this one. Very early on I foolishly cornered myself into this "meh" composition (it's a long, boring story) and then after I finished, I had to completely redo the woman since the one I had originally painted wasn't in the book. Lots of early mistakes on my part that really impacted the final product. Wish I had a do-over.

One a positive note, I may have finally figured out how to show the green lantern power in CMYK.

Actually I really like this composition. The fallen GLs are a bit awkwardly placed (facing away from us...) but it has a very dire feeling and conveys the mood perfectly.

Lord, I didn't realize you were a god like, real deal comic book artist. Now, I'm not sure you would be interested in helping little ol me. I LOVE your art style!

But if you would be interested in helping me out could you let me know?

You know I look at your art and I see an awesome piece of artwork, but i know how you feel about your own work every one says it great but you see the flaws, I think that artists in general go thought a want of perfection, its a blessing and a curse

How much direction to cover artists usually get? Is it usually very vague and open, like "draw something that has to do with the story", or is it more specific, like, "draw this guy doing this and this guy doing this while this happens"?

And, do the directions usually come from the writer himself/herself, or from the editor?

I'm just sort of curious. Cover art seems hard because you have one image to create a dynamic potent effect because you don't have the luxury of words to tell the story for you. And, between "hero posing triumphantly" and "hero in peril", it's hard to do a new take that no one else has done before.

I must say that I enjoy your covers very much and you succeed at making them interesting. They are very detailed, yet sleek.

Thanks. More often than not I get a few 1-2 sentence cover ideas from the editor or writer and then they let me run with it. For this cover, I was given a brief rundown of the basic story with the new villain character designs. My favorite situation is when I'm given a full script and told I can come up with my own concept.

You're welcome.

And thanks for the info! I love learning about the biz!

It seems like it would be rewarding to do a cover, because it's the first thing the reader will see and will plant the first ideas into his or her head, sort of affecting the entire reading experience. At the same time, I cannot imagine how long it would take to color something like this!

About you not being satisfied with the composition, what would you have done differently if given the chance? Although I really like it, I think it would have been cool if the view of the villains was sort of a deeper perspective at a dizzying angle. I can't really explain it, but sort of like a semi-overhead view of them where they fade very far into the background in a V or something...

But I still love it. I guess you may see problems with it because you are an artist and you know what you're looking at, but me and the other schmoes who buy comics, it doesn't take absolute perfectionism to impress us!

Thanks. I would have done an entirely different layout. I just needed more time to brainstorm ideas; time which I didn't really have in this instance.

Actually I'm fine with reds & yellows. For me, it's purples, greens, and sometimes blues that are a pain.

I don't have too much trouble with those, except the purple. It seems to be anything leaning more towards the reds. Of course I also work at a newspaper so it certainly goes a different route with colors. If i work on something color wise there and bring it home....whew

Bright green unto itself looks like shit in print. But a tight yellow and blue combo, much better. And the more vibrant yellow, the more better. Just have to balance. Pretty simple :)

While yes, it does have a bit of a 'meh' quality to it, you do still have a nice series of dynamics going with it. The refrection from the power rings as well as the first person perspective make the piece work.

Nice job for a 'meh' job.
